Fundraising Guidance

Dear International Trip Participants,

Thank you to all those who could attend the meeting on Tuesday evening, I hope that it was useful for you. As promised, this email includes a summary of what was discussed. Hopefully this all makes sense to those of you who were unable to attend also, but if you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact me via email.

Firstly, if you’re a WSJ participant, please don’t forget to apply for the Scouts Dream Fund. This has now been extended until 11:59pm on Tues 12th April. Scouts are really keen to help to support as many Young People get to Korea as possible, so don’t miss out. https://www.scouts.org.uk/volunteers/running-your-section/international-scouts-and-events/in ternational-events/wsj/25wsj-resources/dream-fund-for-the-25-world-scout-jamboree/

Everything else that we discussed is relevant to both WSJ and Project 23. It also applies to those attending these events as leaders or IST.

Role of Fundraising Coordinators:

Rozy and I were approached by the District Team to support you all in your fundraising efforts. We have both been participants in previous World Scout Jamborees as well as having fundraised for other International Scouting trips. Our role is to support, but not to organise fundraising events for you. Young People will be expected to take a lead in organising events, which can be rewarding in itself. We will attend events where we can, and are happy to be approached for guidance and support wherever needed. There are a small number of events which we have taken the lead on, however, and these are outlined below.

Setting up online giving pages:

The Scouts have provided some support on how to fundraise effectively. We recommend that you all set up your own Just Giving (or similar platform) pages to support the collection of money towards your own journey.

Remember when setting up these pages NOT to use the main Scouts Charity number, as all the funds you raise will then go to the national pot and not towards your International journey.

We will also be setting up a general fund for the District, the money from which will be split evenly between all WSJ and Project 23 participants (including IST and leaders). We will send this link around once the page has been created.

A great example is Ollie’s personal Go Fund Me page, he is one of the Unit Leaders from our District.

Applying for grants:

There are loads of grants available to apply for - make the most of them! We recommend that you apply individually where able, but are happy to support you with any applications should you require it. We will also be looking at what group grants are available and applying for these on behalf of the group.

To get you started:

Have a look in your local library for other grants available.

It is also useful to approach your school and Scout group to see how they can support you. You may find that if you approach your old primary school, they may be willing to help as well. Appealing to local businesses can often be fruitful.

Organising events:

Please let us know if you are organising a fundraising event, so that we can help promote it across the district. Those of you in Explorer Units should also inform your Unit leader. Funds raised at these events will be split evenly among those who attend and support the event. The District team will collect the money, and they will organise this being paid to the County, towards your camp fee.

Some great ideas that were put forward at the meeting include Quiz and curry nights, cake / table top sales, bag packing and raffles.
